Show notes

SUBSTANCE is a monthly podcast exploring the materials that shape our world. From hydrogen and plastic to fabric and fungi, each episode unpacks one essential substance — revealing its influence on our world and the surprising innovations that could redefine its role in our lives. In conversations with leading scientists and industry experts, host Joe Hanson offers fresh perspectives on how chemistry and innovation can help us tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges. Whether you’re a curious mind, a science enthusiast, or someone who simply wonders about the “stuff” all around us, SUBSTANCE tells the stories that matter — one material at a time.

00:00:03: Substance.

00:00:09: We humans are builders, creators.

00:00:12: And right now, we face our biggest challenge yet.

00:00:16: Finding cleaner ways to power everything that we've built.

00:00:26: Welcome to Substance, a podcast about the discoveries and innovations in chemistry and beyond, helping us build a sustainable society for the future.

00:00:36: We tell stories about stuff that shapes our world.

00:00:40: In our first episode, we're going to start at the beginning with hydrogen.

00:00:44: In many ways, hydrogen is at the foundation of this question of energy and habitability.

00:00:50: More than one hundred million tons of hydrogen are produced worldwide each year.

00:00:55: Most of it comes from fossil fuels.

00:00:58: And if we want a climate-friendly future, we have to look for new sources.

00:01:03: Some of them are deep underground in billion-year-old rocks.

00:01:07: It was more than thirty percent.

00:01:09: hydrogen.

00:01:10: And that was a big aha moment because at that point in time we hadn't understood that these systems would be so full of what's now become known as natural hydrogen.

00:01:22: And that discovery was just the beginning.

00:01:25: We're basically

00:01:26: at the beginning of the natural hydrogen industry.

00:01:29: Very much like we were at the beginning of the hydrocarbon industry over a hundred years ago.

00:01:36: Substance is a podcast from BASF.

00:01:38: hosted by me, Joe Hansen.

00:01:41: Subscribe right now, wherever you get your podcasts.

00:01:45: Substance.
